This is my crochet- goal-- to create my own bikinis. I'll take care of the sexy part ; ) Any bikini patterns? My fave so far is vintage one, from the year of my birth(!)-- I seem to have misplaced the pattern, but when/if I find it, I'll be sure to post a link here. Have any to share?

  • I've always been suspicious of knitted/crocheted swimwear. I can't imagine a kind of yarn & a stitch that would actually expand and contract the way a bathing suit needs to. I guess a crocheted bikini would look great poolside, as long as it doesn't get wet.

That having been said, there is a crochet bikini pattern in the new Happy Hooker book.
    • Yeah, I was figuring I'd wear it more for non-swimming activities like spending the day at the beach or just laying out in the sun. I would, however, love to try them out in the water, but I certainly wouldn't pick a crocheted one to do any sort of real water sports-- but who knows-- maybe there is a great yarn out there that can handle it?

The bikinis with side ties seems more reasonable, as you can always adjust the tightness.

I'll look for the Happy Hooker book. I've never heard of it. Thanks! *note: googling this one will certainly be funny*
      • You must share what you find when you google it.
        • The pattern in the Happy Hooker book is super cute and looks really easy - and it even covers the ass a bit, too so might actually be wearable and comfortable. Should only take you a day or two to finish.

BTW, I bought this book a couple of months ago and have made five of the projects. It's a really great book with good instructions, hip patterns, etc. Highly recommended. Also recommend that if you do start one of these patterns to go to her web site and download the corrections - there are a few and some of them critical.

          Good luck!
          • Hi Everyone!

I just started crocheting and picked up "The Happy Hooker". It's fantastic. The instructions on the stitches are very detailed and easy to understand, plus the patterns are great too! Easy to read and follow. HIGHLY recommended.

            :)

I have made Bikinis for my daughter's Barbie Dolls. I don't have a pattern, I just did it free hand. I also made a wide brimmed hat to match the Bikini. I hadn't thought about that little project in years. Thankyou for joggling my ole grey matter. I need to call her and see if she still has those old Barbie outfits we made together. I might need to make more for my Grandaughter.
As for a fiber that might hold up in the water - If you line the Bikini with some Spandex fabric, it would help 2 ways, 1-it would be more comfy, and 2- it would help it cling to your body when it got wet.

Only pattern I've seen recently for a bikini was a knitted version. So no help on that front.

However, I did like the material that was used in the construction, plus it's a cotton/elastic yarn, which is better for making swimwear. You can read about it (and find a store near you) at www.cascadeyarns.com/cascade...tion.asp My only advice? Make those gauge swatches... and that this stuff is slippery as heck.
    • Hi Melanie! I looked up The Happy Hooker and got inspired to get it! :P I'm struggling a bit with the stitches, but perhaps i'm using yarn and hook that's a bit too fine for a beginner... not so easy to see the stitches and handle the thread... :P

But I do love the book, it's very inspiring :) I can't wait to be able to make the Violet Beauregard skirt..!
