I never gave it much thought until I was looking to buy a new crochet hook online. People had reviews on different crochet hooks. There seems to be two major brands - Susan Bates and Boye. And after looking at them closer the two brands have definite different shapes. Do you pros have preferences?

  • At the risk of sounding like a dork.. I love the hooks I was given by my grandmother. They just "feel" right to me...
Otherwise I'll just use any that is the right size.
  • AERO-BERNAT baby!!!! They aren't produced anymore though. The factory that made them in England burned down.... =( The shape of the hook is like a Boye, but the texture is very slick and smoothe so I can work quickly.... I lurk around ebay trying to buy them when I can.
  • If the choise is between those two I choose boye. I find them easier to work with. I prefer the smallersleeker head and lip. Susan Bates' hooks can be especially difficult for beginners.

i use susan bates aluminum, with the 'inline' heads. i think it helps me keep my stitches even. i use boye steelies tho
    • I only use Susan Bates hooks. Everyone I've introduced to them prefers them to the Boye. The flat space under the hook keeps the yarn from slipping away when you are pulling it through, great for beginners!
      • Here's a vote for *not* Susan Bates. It's probably to do with the way I hold my hooks when I work, but I haven't yet worked with a SB hook that held onto the yarn. Something's different about the way the heads are cut, and I don't like 'em at all.
        • It is so interesting how a group of people can have the exact opposite opinion about something like a crochet hook. The exact reason I don't like Bates is the same reason some people don't like Boye. I guess it shows that you can't really know if something will work for you unless you try it out for your self.
  • Susan Bates but not the regular color painted ones, I like the Quicksilver Susan Bates, but can only find them in one shop. they look like a Susan Bates hook but they are smooth and have a glass like finish.
  • Gee I have crochet for years and years and I so far don't have a prefrance. As long as the hook is the size I need I am fine. I adapt well to any I have tried.
