Commercial free patterns?

topic posted Mon, September 3, 2007 - 4:16 PM by  Angela
Hey all! I'm mainly a lurker. Don't mind me.

Besides that... I've been having one hell of a time trying to find commercial free patterns. That's what they're called, right?

I've found some on Etsy. They're very limited. I've asked some pattern writers... I either get a (friendly) "no" or no response. I don't want to mass produce, I just want to add variety and inventory to my at-home-crafty-biz. (I won't advertise, I swear! hehe)

Also, before anybody suggests I write my own patterns... been there, done that. Its next to impossible coming up with something nobody else has.

So yeah, if anybody can point me to commercial free patterns, I'd be doing handstands. I have next to no cash, but sometimes I can pay for them (like the ones from Etsy).

Keep hookin!

I assume you mean royalty-free free patterns, correct?

Yes, thats it! :) I think.

Basically, patterns that I can use to make items and sell from.

        Hi Angela,
I am not at all trying to be rude, as far as I know it is technically unethical to create something from someone else's pattern and sell it without their explicit permission. I am not sure of the exact laws though.

          good point!

you could try asking the author for specific permission ~ the worst they could say is "no" :)

I've actually been having a stroke of luck. I've found quite a few people on etsy.com who are willing to let me sell from their patterns. Some have asked that I don't sell on etsy, some asked me not to sell online at all, some said I could only make so many. These conditions are just fine and I'm happy to oblige.

I've found one cool lady that has knitting patterns she'll let me sell from, too :)

    Free Patterns

There are literally thousands upon thousands of crochet patterns that are no longer available simply because they were published many years ago and are now out of print. Fortunately, the Internet gives us the opportunity to share these fun, exciting and long lost designs for everyone to enjoy again. We are currently working on reproducing our library of vintage patterns that have passed into the public domain and will include them here as quickly as we can.

All of the patterns that appear here have passed into the public domain. That means that these designs are no longer protected by copyright and you are free to do whatever you would like to do with them! Copy them, share them, make finished items from them and sell them - let your imagination run wild!

I'm just looking through the site, now, myself.....

    enjoy!

    love all-ways,

I've only just learned to chrochet in the past few months, but have already learned to alter designs to my own needs, and create my own things. I love it, and am pleased to know that my own additions and designs are uniqe and I can sell them as such. I do often see patterns that I find to be beautiful and want to try them, but I primarily make things either for my family or to sell, and I hate to use someone else's pattern for my own profit, as stated so elequently above.
