I'm trying to build my little library and wanted to know what you guys have liked in the past. I like really modern things and I find most crocheted clothes to be obscene. It take a very, very good yarn and a delicious concept to come up with some decent crocheted sweaters, etc.

I've found a handful of things in the Interweave Crochet magazine I'd wear. I haven't got the skills to make them yet, but I found some items that were attractive and flattering.
I don't make much in the way of clothing, so I can't help with those kinds of books and pattern collections. -

HI,
I'm new here, just found this site, the tribe site that is, last week.
I'd have to agree that the best clothing pieces I've seen was last fall's interweave knits crochet edition. I made several of the sweaters for gifts for my nieces and they loved them.
I've looked through all the crochet books at Michael's and AC moore trying to spend the 50% off coupon I had last january and couldn't come up with a book I liked a whole lot.
There is a book called 300 crochet stitches that's one volume of a craft series that i like a lot. (I get it at the library whenever I want it so don't know exactly what it's called right now). If you find a sweater or skirt or other item you like in crochet you could use this book to come up with other stitch ideas to make a new one that'll be different enough that most people won't be able to tell it's the same as a diff outfit you may have, etc. -

Angi,
You should try checking out you local yarn shop and regular book stores. I have found a lot of crochet books that have peaked my interested at both locations. I just bought Stitch 'n bitch crochet: the happy hooker. I don't agree with everything Debbie wrote in the learing to crochet section. But there are some fun patterns in there. I especially like the monkey baby hat, the skull hot pads and the "orange yoiu glad and fashion first aid" purses. (I just made my first all crochet purse with pockets in it. I can't wait to make more, I think they will be a really hot item.) There are a few other things that are cute and also a few that I would not wish on anyone.
I bought Cool Crochet a while back, but I think I bought more for inspiration than anything else. I am not much of a sweater maker and thats about the only cool stuff in it.
I love the book, Crocheted Socks! there are a bunch of fun and inovative ideas in it. I have always been told that you can't crochet a good sock, it must be knit. I have totally shot that myth down. I love my crocheted socks.
Wrap Style only has one crochet pattern in it, but I thought it was good enough to buy the whole book.
I have other books that I like too, but I can't find them right now. I think I will make something from the Happy Hooker.

If someone hasn't mentioned this, I think the Harmony Guides are must haves. They provide lots of information and lots of different stitches as well.

I bought Donna Kooler's Encylopedia of crochet u.s. list price on back cover $24.95 (I paid half that on sale good reference type book. I keep checking the crochet stich bible out at my library I think that is about $25.00 also

I love crochet magic magisines they are wonderful use a diagram instead of discribing each row in words. Much easier following a diagram I can put down a large item like a table cloth or doily for weeks and look at my project then look at the diagram and know exactly where I am at. when discribed row by row I have to mark off each row as a go. what a pain.

Have you seen Stitch N Bitch Crochet, the Happy Hooker? It is a fun book, big, lots of photos, diagrams, quality pages and text, lots of projects and ideas...not the usual run-of-the-mill.
