Hi I'm new to the tribe and kind of new to crochet. I can do single crochet but when i get to the end of a row i flip the pice around and work in the same derection (which by fliping makes it the opisit). I end up with lines runing through my work and wonder if i am doing something wrong.

You are not doing anything wrong. My guess is that you are crocheting thorugh one loop only. If you do not want the lines, insert your hook through both loops of the stitch before yarning over.

Working through the front or back loop of a stitch can be used to create some interesting effects, there is nothing wrong with it, it just isn't what you want to use if you do not want lines or ridges in your work.
