A basic, double crochet granny square can be used as a coaster or become the start of a blanket, tote bag or hat. Granny squares are a great way to practice crocheting in the round.
1. Take your worsted weight yarn and medium size crochet hook.
2. Chain six and make a slip stitch though the first chain to form a ring.
3. Once you have a ring, chain three. This equals a first stitch in double crochet.
4. Double crochet three times into the center of the ring.
5. Chain two and make three double crochet into the center of the ring.
6. Repeat last step, between two more times for a total of 4 groups of 3 double crochet stitches.
7. To finish the round, slip stitch into the third chain of the round.
8. You can switch to a new color at this point if you like. Join the second color of yarn in one of the chain-2 spaces.
9. Chain three for the first dc (double crochet).
10. In the same ch-2 space, a corner, do two double crochet, chain two, and do three more double crochet. A new corner should be forming.
11. Chain one and skip to the next corner.
12. Again, do 3 dc, chain 2, and 3 more dc.
13. Skip to next corner. Repeat until all four corners are done.
14. Slip stitch to the first corner to finish the round.
15. You can switch colors again if you like for the third round. You can join the yarn in the chain one space before a corner.
16. Chain 3 and make 2 dc in the ch-1 space.
17. Chain 1 and then make 3 dc, chain 2, and 3 more dc in the ch-2 corner space.
18. Chain 1 and make 3 dc in the ch-1 space. Chain 1 and make 3 dc, chain 2, and 3 more dc in ch-2 corner space.
19. Repeat last step between all the way around the square.
20. Join the third round with a slip stitch.
21. You can make the granny square larger if you like, now that you have the basic technique.

Re: How to Crochet a Granny Square.
Mon, February 2, 2009 - 7:17 AMI LOVE Granny Squares. A high school boyfriend's Mother taught me how to do them.
My favorite ones I've ever made were rainbow ones, starting with Red in the center and moving out to Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple and then Black trim. sweet!

Re: How to Crochet a Granny Square.
Wed, February 4, 2009 - 8:45 AMMy Mother started me on Granny Squares because if you can make them, you'll be able to do most anything else. Actually, she had to show me how to do single and treble crochet later. One of my sister-in-laws could make the ugliest granny squares ever made. Her sense of color was so poor. A lot of people hate them for that sort of reason. I have seen some very beautiful granny squares. My afghan was the pattern Momma had made and was a formal flower garden arangement. Each square started with yellow, two colors then green and a black border.
