Did you guys see the Call for Help on a mail-in crochet project for Burning Man? This one girl is making leaves for a tree...
I guess the point is, that participants can pull the strings and unravel the leaves as the event goes on.
She wants as much help as possible. I was thinking of contributing.

I'll go find her link so you can see what I am talking about.

There it is! Whatt'ya all think?
    • I think it's great. It gave me a reason to learn to make leaves! I made a few, and would like to make a few more before sending them to her. I'll be sure to check it out once there. It also inspired me to make a few types of flowers, just for the heck of it. Perhaps I can attatch them to future projects. The leaves were fun to make, after I figured it all out.
    • hi! sorry i missed this.. haven't been online much lately. too busy workin on my tree! but it looks like you found my website :)

i'm definitely still in need of help making leaves. i've moved on to the construction of the tree, which is turning out to be very time consuming indeed, so i'm in need of help on the leaf-creation side of things more than ever.

i'm also hosting a crochet-a-leaf workshop on june 27.. might be kind of unnecessary for those in this tribe, since you already know how to crochet, but please stop by if you'd like to! details are on my website.

      thanks for the interest!!
  • I've seen this a bunch of times and I have very high moop concerns. I have read what she says about attaching them and everything, but still out there in high winds - i see a lot of possible yarn strays. I don't feel comfortable enough that it will really not just end up a huge moop fiasco so I am not contributing.
    • hi again all! creating a moop-free sculpture has been a huge, huge focus of the design of this piece. check out this blog entry from the projects' early days: treeundone.livejournal.com/3672.html my contact at burning man suggested that i try this this experiment. i attached the leaves to the branch in several different ways, and none of them came off the branch at 70mph winds.

all the leaves are wound into 'twigs'. example here: picasaweb.google.com/pokiedo...9476370t

the tail of the first leaf of the twig is twisted into wire, then tied to the second leaf's tail, and then both tails are twisted in the wire, then the third, etc. each leaf ends up being tied to the wired in at least two places. the wire then gets wound around the actual branches of the tree.

acrylic yarn is very strong, and if people tug at their leaf too hard, it is more likely that they will pull off a branch of the tree before the yarn breaks. a stoned girl at precompression proved this for me. i had an example branch nailed on the wall at precom, and invited people to unravel some leaves. being stoned or maybe just out of it, one gal pulled out her leaf and then just kept pulling.. yanking, and tugging *really* hard. i got up from my seat and went over to stop her, but before i could the whole branch came flying off the wall. it was funny!

anyways... i'm not saying this because i'm trying to convince you to make me leaves! ha ha.. no no! i just really want the burner community to be comfortable with my project. i'd hate to be the sculpture that sets off everyone's red-moop-flags in their heads, so i'm taking every effort to cover my bases, moop-wise, and to get the word out that i'm doing everything i can do to prevent one piece of yarn from hitting the ground :)
      • Wow, thanks, Josie, for testing this at precompression. Very wise!
        • Well - thanks for your reply.

I thikn we all understand how it feels. How is your project going now?
          • project is in full swing! i bring my leaves everywhere, and i'm constantly making more twigs. more and more leaves arrive in the mail everyday, which is so cool and inspiring. i finished my first 'branch' last weekend, and this weekend will probably get a few more done. the finished branch looks wils and bushy and full of crazy color.. it is perfect! just what i wanted.

but i still have a ton to do, and a wave of panic shoots through me whenever i see that countdown of "__ days until the man burns". hope i can pull it off!
            • Can we bring some to the playa?
              • hi karine! sorry i didn't see this earlier. i've been crazy busy getting this tree finished. it looks great!

i won't turn away leaves, but at this point the tree is pretty much finished and i won't be adding many more to the tree. each leave has to be tied and bound into a wire 'twig', which is a bit labor intensive, and i don't know if i'll have time to do that out there. but i'm thinking about making a second mini-tree for decom, just so i can use some of the more moopy leaves i received (i received about 300 i can't take to the playa). so i won't say 'no' but they may not get added to this particular tree.

please stop by and say 'hi' out there! i'll be working at the black rock arts foundation camp, at the entrance to center camp, for much of the week during the day.
