For turning chains, my book says you can either count the loop with the tc as the first stich OR go into that loop as the first stich so long as you are consistent. (I hope I said that right.)
Which do you do? It turns out really weird if I do it the first way.

Usually for single crochet stitches, at the end of the row you chain one, turn, then crochet into the last single crochet that you created.
for all other stitches, except the slip stitch, you chain a certain amount, like with the double crochet you chain 3, and that counts as your first stitch. you then crochet into the second to last stitch you created.
Here is an example:
Ch3, dc, dc, dc, dc, dc
dc, dc, dc, dc, dc, ch3
Ch3, dc, dc, dc, dc, dc
ch1, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc,
sc, sc, sc, sc, sc, ch1
ch1, sc, sc, sc, sc, sc
