Is it just me?

...or is yarn, basic yarn like Red Heart, etc., just not as soft as it used to be?

I pulled out an afghan I was working on about 10 years ago that was sealed up in storage, completely forgotten about, and boy is that thing soft... I used regular Red Heart yarn, too, some of the packaging is still there. It's never been washed or anything, so I compared it to some of the projects I am working on now, and this new yarn seems so rough! Even the "baby" yarn we get nowadays seems a bit rough to me. (Note: Synthetic yarn comparisons; I have allergies and so always must use synthetic yarn, not those supersoft nice woolies.)

Discuss.

I've noticed that too when I've pulled out old stuff. I think the quality just isn't want it used to be or maybe it's the processing or something.

I stopped using basic yarns a while ago because I was finding they just felt so wrong.... not really sure how to describe it but wrong. I use hand spun yarn for the most part now. It costs more but boy can you feel the difference.

No, I was shocked by the plastic feel of the last skirt I made with Red Heart. Check out the Sensations line from Joann Fabrics. www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp I've made a shawl out of the rainbow classic and was very, very impressed by how soft it was to work and how soft the end product turned out. www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp

It's best to order the Sensations online since I've noticed that the Joann's by me doesn't carry many skeins of the same color and it's hard to match the dye lot.
