What do you see as the major differences between knitting and crochet? What are the postive and negative attributes to the two different techniques?

1. I think crochet is a lot faster than knitting.
2. Knitting has some cool intricate design patterns.

Horizontal-striped armwarmers? (beginner help!)

Hi! I've just started learning crochet, and my first project was a superbasic set of armwarmers-with-thumb-holes, from this pattern:

All well and good, but I want STRIPES. This particular pattern is worked lengthwise, flat, and then stitched together up the arm, leaving a thumb hole at the "seam". I'm not sure how one would adapt this for stripes-- any ideas?

Also, I'm pondering just crocheting in the round, which would make it much easier to add stripes, but then the armwarmers wouldn't be very stretchy. (The reason I like the pattern above is that it's worked so that the stretch is horizontal (around the wrist/arm) rather than up-down the arm). Also, puzzled as to how I'd do a thumb thing.

Any suggestions? Alternately, know of any super-basic (no weird floofy things, no strange stitching) striped armwarmer patterns floating around?

...or is yarn, basic yarn like Red Heart, etc., just not as soft as it used to be?

I pulled out an afghan I was working on about 10 years ago that was sealed up in storage, completely forgotten about, and boy is that thing soft... I used regular Red Heart yarn, too, some of the packaging is still there. It's never been washed or anything, so I compared it to some of the projects I am working on now, and this new yarn seems so rough! Even the "baby" yarn we get nowadays seems a bit rough to me. (Note: Synthetic yarn comparisons; I have allergies and so always must use synthetic yarn, not those supersoft nice woolies.)

Children's scarf measurements please.

I am wanting to crochet some simple scarves for Elementary School children, but have no idea of the sizes. You don't see many hat and scarf sets for children at Walmart, and they kinda frown on people pulling out a tape measure and writing down information.

If someone can tell me the width and length for First through Fifth graders I would appreciate it. I'm thinking I might be able to use up some odd yarn. Our office will be giving hats, scarves and gloves to one local school next month as part of a reading program.

The ones I've made in the past include the most basic knit blended with Simply Soft and a skein of a funky yarn that I hate to crochet with. I do a simple sc, dc so that I have a bit of pattern and texture when I crochet a basic scarf. They're predicting a bad winter for this year, so I would like to help out if I can.

Commercial free patterns?

Hey all! I'm mainly a lurker. Don't mind me.

Besides that... I've been having one hell of a time trying to find commercial free patterns. That's what they're called, right?

I've found some on Etsy. They're very limited. I've asked some pattern writers... I either get a (friendly) "no" or no response. I don't want to mass produce, I just want to add variety and inventory to my at-home-crafty-biz. (I won't advertise, I swear! hehe)

Also, before anybody suggests I write my own patterns... been there, done that. Its next to impossible coming up with something nobody else has.

So yeah, if anybody can point me to commercial free patterns, I'd be doing handstands. I have next to no cash, but sometimes I can pay for them (like the ones from Etsy).

Has anyone here tried TOFUtsies yarn with the chitin in it? How does it work up? What do you think of it as a functional yarn (not just a novelty)?

Is it true that the shells come from restaurant waste & by-products?

Do you know if someone with shellfish allergies would have a problem with it? I've been looking around on the web and I can't find anything one way or the other just yet that speaks to the allergies.

YeeHaw Lady Hat from Happy Hooker

hi there. i just got myself the happy hooker book. i was just trying my hands on the yeehaw lady hat until im stuck in round 1. i hope you can enlighten me with the problem im facing. here goes:

in Rnd 1 it says I should have 15sc which I could get. Then in Rnd 2 it reads:

Rnd 2: Ch 1 (count as first pointed front sc), sc in each of next 3 sc (3), 2 sc in next sc (1), (sc,ch2,sc) in next sc (1) (front tip of hat), 2 sc in next next sc (1), sc in each of next 4 sc (4), 2 sc in each of next 4 sc (4) (rounded back of hat), sl st in next sc to join - 22sc.

somehow i just managed to get only 14 sticthes (higlighted in red) work into, which makes me left with the extra one sc. i know if i count the ch1 then i get the 15sc, but the ch1 was not worked into the next sc.

does the slip stitch count as 1 sc cuz it says slip stitch in next sc?

i hope this makes sense. i've tried the other forums to emailing dot and debbie but none had reply.

the edition i got was: 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2

please help...

Hi I'm new to the tribe and kind of new to crochet. I can do single crochet but when i get to the end of a row i flip the pice around and work in the same derection (which by fliping makes it the opisit). I end up with lines runing through my work and wonder if i am doing something wrong.

I just found this tribe, and *had* to join! I'm teaching myself to crochet, having tried and given up when I was younger and not touching a hook at all between then and the Christmas just gone. But I am already very much a devotee of the craft: I commute to work, so crochet is a beautifully creative, meditative way to pass the hour-and-a-half-each-way train trip. :)

So far I have successfully created a fairly freeform belt (I made it up as I went along), and a beanie made entirely of slip-stitches because I wan't thinking when I started and was convinced I was single-crocheting. I'm currently fighting my way through a pair of socks and getting stuck at the heels. :\ (What's this beginner/internediate/advanced levels stuff? I just want to make stuff!)

Getting Buffaloed in a Yarn Shop

I'm sitting here holding one brown skein and one blue skein. Together, plus 8% sales tax, they came out to about $175.

Holy crap! you say. And I said it right along with you.

What in the world would possess you to spend $175 on two measly skeins of yarn?

Well, you see...

I was in Oklahoma for my mom's graduation. We stopped at Sealed With a Kiss in Guthrie. A nice little yarn shop. I'm from Oregon - we have yarn. Finding yarn wasn't much of an issue. So I decided I wanted to look for something... "Oklahoma." Something I couldn't find at just any yarn shop. Two minutes in the store, and I found it. Buffalo down. Not even just buffalo wool, but the downy undercoat. Oh ye gods and little monkeys, it's soft. The shoplady said they call it "Oklahoma cashmere." There was a finished scarf next to the basket of yarn. Holy mole, it's soft.

And next to all of that was Qiviuk. Alaskan Musk Ox. Almost as soft as the buffalo down (which is saying something!).

I went back and forth and back and forth. I finally decided a) my mom had flown all us kids out for her graduation with her frequent flyer miles, so I hadn't paid for transportation, b) I was staying at her place so I wasn't paying for a hotel, c) we had most of our meals at her place or they were taken care of in other ways, and d) when the heck else was I going to find buffalo down in its natural habitat? Ok, the musk ox wasn't exactly local, but dangit, as long as I was going to get the buffalo anyway, I might as well go all the way.

The buffalo down is a beautiful shade of... well, buffalo brown. The musk ox is "arctic bluebird," a nicely dark shade of blue. I don't have patterns yet for either skein, but I am pretty sure they'll become scarves. I kinda want to save part of them to make a "Noah's Ark" blanket - I have some yak leftover from a previous project. It could be a nifty animal sampler blanket. And at the time, the yak/merino blend was the most expensive yarn I'd ever bought (about $20/skein).

In the meantime, I think I'll just content myself with being blown away with the sales receipt from this trip. I've spent this much on yarn before. Just not on only two skeins.

Ideas for Chunky Wool Yarn?

I posted this in the Knitters tribe, too...

My grandma gave me two skeins of wool yarn, yummy to the touch, chunky weight. One is a bark brown, the other a deep mossy green. They are 4 oz each. Anyone got any ideas? I wonder if it is enough for that felted bag I wanted to try. If I make it up as I go, I could make it enough maybe. Not sure how well it will felt, a paper tag says "Tall Yarns - 100% Wool - Made in Canada" and that's it.

My First Sweater (for real this time :)

I got some really cool stuff this year for Christmas. Including two pattern books. One skein wonders, and knit two together. They are both knit books, but I prefer knit patterns then I just turn it into a crochet pattern.

Right now I am making the Santa Cruz hoodie. It will be my first completed sweater. I have started a couple, and one twice. But I really think I will finish this one, this time. For one I have all the yarn to complete it, and for two, I am already almost done with just the back section. I am really excited, and can't wait to wear it. I am using, gasp, acrylic yarn from Michaels. But hey it was free, and looks nice. It is a boucle, and is dark and light brown.

I am trying to figure out if I should use light brown, purple, or pink, or a combination of two or more of the colors as accent colors. The pattern does the body of the sweater one color and the arms another color. What do you think?

helmet liners for US troops

Does anyone know how to keep yarn from getting fuzzy? Can you spray it with something or apply oil to it? Recently I've been using Lion Brand Homespun yarn, which is soft and nice to work with, but gets fuzzy really quickly. Any suggestions would be appeciated.

I have been to many yarn shops and I have to say my all time favorite is the one in my very own town. Ancient Pathways in Fresno, California. They have a fantastic selection of yarn, and you get to sit around a great big table and work on your project while chatting it up with other fiber fanatics. The ambiance is the best you could ask for.

So, holiday season is approaching and as usual funds are low, so this year all of my nieces and nephews are getting handmade scarfs. Since I have started crocheting I have used low end yarn and have know idea what brand would be nice for making scarfs that are good quality. Does anyone have any advice as to what type or brand I should use, so in my attempt at not buying crapy toys from Kmart doesn't end in making crappy scarfs instead.

Your most time-consuming project ever

So, what was it? Was it worth it? Can you post it?

I just finished the caplet on the front of Interweave Crochet's summer edition. It took me about 3 months (albeit I can only get in about an hour a day of Crochet). At the bottom of the thing each row was about 2 hours. But it was worth it - people are really amazed when I tell them that I did it, and it's so pretty!

Newbie Question about Turning

For turning chains, my book says you can either count the loop with the tc as the first stich OR go into that loop as the first stich so long as you are consistent. (I hope I said that right.)

Which do you do? It turns out really weird if I do it the first way.

I've knitted since I was a little girl but haven't done much with crochet other than edgings and finishings on some of my knitting projects. Swift Thinking

I have been coveting swifts and ball winders lately. As I get away from buying Red Heart crappy acrylic and buying nicer yarns (yes, acrylic among them, but still - nicer acrylic), I'm finding the yarn is sold less in center-pull skeins or balls and more in twisted hanks, which is a pain in the tucas to work from. I can get by without a ball winder, as I can wind the yarn on my fingers just fine (though I ought to learn how to make a center-pull by hand). But a swift is just plain indispensable. Until recently, I'd only seen the umbrella-style swifts in stores. I really don't have anywhere to keep one set up, and if it's not up and ready to go, I'll never get around to getting it out. But a week or so ago, I saw a different style, the second one down here: http://www.halcyonyarn.com/odds_ends/Swifts_ConeBall_Winders.html. It's four arms, each arm has a series of holes, and there's pegs for each arm - you adjust for the loop of yarn by moving the pegs closer in or further out. The whole contraption rotates on a base.

It occurred to me that it's basically a lazy susan with adjustable pegs. Well, heck. The swift was beautifully crafted wood. But not a terribly complicated deisgn. So today I bought a lazy susan. Took it home and placed four canned food cans on it. Adjusted for circumference of hank/loop of yarn I needed to wind. Worked fabulously! The yarn started slipping upwards at one point, threatening to come up off the cans. If this becomes a problem, I can put a small cookie sheet on top, and put another can on top of that to weight it down.

18" lazy susan, $7.50 (after family/employee discount at Storables - was orignally $13)
4 cans of food, approximately 79 cents each (already on hand)

handmade wooden swift bought at yarn shop ~ $54.95 (and up to $150, depending on the model)

solving the problem with low-tech ingenuity: savings of $44 and up.

Why yes, I'm rather pleased with myself. :)

Manly Crochet Scarves?

I'm on a scarf crocheting kick lately. I ~finally~ graduated from the single and double crocheting basic things phase to the MUCH cooler-looking scarves. I found a great and easy pattern on the flip side of the Caron Simply Soft Brites label. They are turning out beautiful!

But I have a guy in mind who actually ~wants~ me to crochet him a scarf(!). Now he's a burner, and is definately unafraid of wild colors, but I can't see him wearing the lacy pattern that seems to me so feminine. Anyone have a more 'manly' scarf pattern for me to crochet? Oh, and an easy pattern is a good thing!

Yarn Cocktails

Anyone know about the book Yarn Cocktails? (http://anastasiaknits.com) It's supposed to have a bunch of "small and hip" knit and crochet patterns, stuff that will fit in a purse for easy travel. Each pattern is named after a drink, and accompanied by the recipe for that drink. The website has lots of pictures of the finished products. Some of them are nifty, some of them... I don't personally know any guy interested in a knit wallet, but maybe I just lead a sheltered life. Some of the items really aren't going to help the "not your grandma's crochet" cause. And I can't say I've ever been very interested in 99% of the knitted/crocheted jewelry I've ever seen. But I did like the Candy Apple tank top, even if I would never wear fringe around my midsection. And I did like a few of the other projects.

I'm curious how easy/hard the patterns are to follow, and how many crochet vs. knit projects there actually are. The website indicates which on some. I'm terrible about being able to tell the difference between knit and crochet just by looking at a product. Maybe someone else can help me figure it out.

Cute idea for a pattern book, though.

Push-Button Life

Ah, my push-button life. I live the Jetson's Dream. I push buttons and pretty pictures pop up on the computer screen. I push some more buttons and lo! I've bought stuff that will soon be sent to me! I push more buttons. More pretty pictures, this time on the television (sometimes with help from the DVD/VCR players). A few buttons and a twist of a dial and I have dinner cooking in the crockpot. One button and the rice cooker is off and running with the addition for the crockpot dinner. One button means hot tea. Another button means warmed-up chinese food. A third button means hot popcorn for the movie I'll start with the touch of a button. Another button and dial and the dishes are washing themselves. One more dial and the clothes are washing themselves too. Two dials and now there's heat in the living room and my bedroom. A series of buttons on the telephone lets me talk to people miles away. One more button and, well, let's just say I'm not quite as lonely for a few minutes.
I love the buttons in my life. I love the life that my buttons allow me to have. I didn't even mind the button that summoned me to the front door to shoo away door-to-door solicitors today.
It did remind me, however, how much I like working on my crochet projects. It does take time. It does take practice. It does take skill. And you know what? There's automatic weaving looms, there's robotic lace-makers, there's knitting machines. But there are no crochet machines yet. And I'm fine with that.

Looking for Buttons in PDX

I'm looking for a couple of buttons in Portland, OR, and I am having a terrible time of it. I'm trying to find a carrot and/or a bunny button for the carrot bag I made a while back, a chile pepper button for the pepper bag, a pickle or cucumber sort of button to match a bag, and some buttons for future bags - corn, banana, eggplant, and maybe an ice cream cone. I was disappointed to find no bunny or carrot buttons at Michael's or Mill End given the Easter craft sales.

Where would you suggest looking for buttons in the Portland area? I can find all kinds of fancy decorative ones at Mill End, Yarn Garden, Farmhouse Knits, and Michael's, but I am really surprised I haven't been able to find much in the way of vegetables.

just my thing.. I take all the little left over pieces of the skeins and I keep them in a ziplock baggie. I keep this in my backpack along with a few spare hooks. I make 6 inch by 6 inch squares and when I run out of a color I grab the next. I stack these squares in a box. wether it is 1 or 26 of a color. That way when I need a quick afghan , lapgan or baby wrap I can choose a color to put it together with a assortment of these squares kinda like a patch work quilt.. and have a fairly easy and quick gift. What do you all do with your left over skeins and pieces.?

TIPS FOR MAKING A SHRUG:

- Measure the circumference of your biceps. Depending on how tight you want the arms to be, add 1 to 3 inches. That's the width of your rectangle.

- As you knit, throw the rectangle across your shoulders to see if the length is right. You're aiming for a piece of knitting that goes from wrist around your back to your other wrist.

- Measure length from wrist to armpit. That's the length of the seam for each sleeve. Take your rectangle and fold it lengthwise. Sew two seams--one on either end--the length you want your sleeves

I don't know how to knit, only how to crochet.
Does anyone have any tips for me? Should I start at the bottom of the jacket or the top?
I made a sweater once, and began at the bottom, and it seemed to be OK. But I want to be able to sew a zipper into the front opening of this.
Also, should I just crochet the whole thing, or should I do it in pieces and then sew them together? The sweater I made is not sewed at all, just crocheted. I didn't use a pattern when I made the sweater either, I just...made it.
And I'm going to use a heavier yarn than what they show in the picture. So it will be a warm jacket, and it will not be real delicate.
Any advice you have is very welcome!!

I'm reading the pattern, and something isn't make sense to me.

The pattern is from "Cool Crochet" by Melissa Leapman. Here is the part that doesn't make sense to me...

Row 1, skip first sc, dc into each sc aross. Ch 1, turn
Row 2, Sc into first dc and into each dc across ending row with sc into top of turning-chain-3. Ch 3 turn

Why am I skipping a stich? This is going to be hopefully, a cute little pullover top and I'm tempted to ignore this, but does anyone have any good ideas?
